Course recommendations
It's up to you to make the effort. Some places are more steadfast than others about want they want you to do but at university level there are plenty of options. If you want to work on a certain topic then go and see the people and make it happen. Most people will understand that you're there to experience as much as possible and will not stand in your way as long as you still do the required amount of work.

Not really - I felt they had the balance about right by splitting our time between lab work and courses. The exams were tricky especially at Christmas when my French still had some improvement to make but the final exams really showed me how much progress I had made.

if you choose to study a foreign language (such as Russian or Portugese), the courses are easy to follow even when your French is not fantastic.

The problem is that most local students come from Marseille or somewhere outside Aix. Therefore, everyone is going home and it is very difficult to socialise with other student. Erasmus students in general have more or less to deal with the university sytem on their own. The university don't seem to care much what we are doing. This should not frustrate you, since it is actually rather convinient...

Course recommendations
Avoid the Maths based classes as they use different notation. Marcoeconomics courses such as Economie Internationale or something Histoire de la Pensée Economique are quite international student friendly.

Less classes of pure dictation (although they are amazingly good for your French!), and better ran exams.
