Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
All in all, I enjoyed living with my friends in Florence, but, we had to pay an agency fee, and it totalled nearly 800 euros for two people, on top of a month's deposit, and a month's rent in advance, was quite an initial sting!

Florence Uni offers NO HELP for foreign (or Italian) students in their search for housing. We came with a pretty below average level of Italian and things were really difficult, it's possible to find a house via street-ads, but as with most things in Italy, it's complicated and quite soul destroying at times.

The University of Florence does not provide any accommodation at all but it's quiet easy to find something nice if you start looking early (September). Really helpful: La Pulce where you find many ads every week. People advertise free rooms also in Piazza Brunelleschi and on campus. Don't pay agencies for addresses - you can find the same in the Pulce.

It is normal if they can not give accomodation to students: erasmus students ar too many and, from my view, most of them should not do it, as they do not take advantage and learn nothing.

The experience is very positive. Not only you get involved within the local culture, but also your language level (in my case italian) benefits so much.

The university offered some help in trying to find a place in one of the few residences in Florence. Fortunately I found my own and I didn't use its help.

The university didn't give us any information about accomodation, only that it was impossible to rent something through the university...I had to look for something through a house rental agency... I won't give any comment about the prices they ask...

The arrangement that the university made for me did not work out. That is why I chose to live with my Italian friends, and it was an unbelievable experience.
