Personal spending habits
The standard of living in Italy was lower at the time. I was frugal about my daily life because I preferred splurging every once in a while to travel.

Personal comments
One of my main goals in going to Italy was to become confident in my command of the language. At the beginning of my study abroad experience I could understand basic phrases, but at times I was just not used to being so immersed in another language. Sometimes I just needed a break because it took a lot of energy to focus on the Italian and understand everything. The main way that I learned Italian and became confident with the language, was by making close Italian friends and limiting my interactions with English. Every experience became a learning experience: buying a train ticket, going to class, reading books in Italian, everything became an opportunity to improve my skills. Now that I have returned from Italy, I still look for ways to continue to improve. I send e-mails to my friends there often, read books in Italian, and watch Italian films...all to maintain the level of Italian I acquired while studying abroad.

I wish I had known...
Not really. I felt well prepared for my experience and discovered so much more while there. I think that this is a really important aspect of the experience and of becoming more independent.

Personal recommendation
I loved staying in Padova. To me, it was city life, but not an overwhelming city life like Venice, Milan, or Florence. I loved the feel to the city and the pace of life in Italy. It was unforgettable and would definitely choose studying there again!

Final comments
I suggest that you really get to know the country. I enjoyed traveling through Italy, more than throughout Europe. It really gave me a sense of what Italy's culture and people are all about. I definitely recommend to people who have ever thought of studying abroad to go for it. It is an amazing experience and is an incredible road of discovery!

Course recommendations
Make sure that you introduce yourself to the professor and discuss whether or not you will be able to handle the course requirements. Sometimes, they can make recommendations (or even alternative ways of completing the course) if it may be more challenging due to limited language skills.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
I loved being in the dorm environment. It put right in the middle of Italian students and gave me an excellent opportunity to meet new people and polish my language skills.

Personal comments
I stayed in a dorm apartment. I had a single room in an dorm/apartment that housed 11 other girls with me (there were both single and double rooms in this housing arrangement.) We had four bathrooms, one kitchen, and common area. The kitchen had four refriderators, two stoves, and each of us had our own cabinet to store food. The kitchen was also stocked with dishes, pots and pans, and utensils. All rooms were furnished and provided sheets and blankets. It was perfect for someone like me who would only be staying temporarily.
