The bussola (university) Housing Agency didn't speak English, and finding an appartment was very difficult to begin with. I could have stayed in University Halls of residence, but they required a Health Check which I hadn't realised, so didn't have the necessary paperwork.

Find a shop which sells non perishable goods, and buy pasta, canned food, toiletries from there, then shop at markets for fresh produce. Find out about the "abonnamento mensile" Monthly season ticket for the buses - it may work out cheaper. Get a bike (Via Zamboni is cheap)(and a VERY good lock).

Final comments
Go in time for the Erasmus Language course in October, it's a great way to build an initial social circle. Join as many Erasmus events as possible (even if you want to meet italians - many will be there).
