Festivals: La Louche d'Or (Wazemmes street festival) La fete de la musique (forgot which day/night it was) l'Áéronef (rock concerts) I went to see the White Stripes there when they were just getting known in Europe; cost me about 15 euros

lots of international students and French speaking Africans, very mixed cultural backgrounds. Rooms were small (9 square meters) and had no kitchen (no fridge) or toilet. Toilets and showers were shared and well maintained, relatively clean. Supermarket on 5 min. walk. University not far away either (10 min. bike). Subway station very nearby. Some rooms (including mine) had nasty cog roaches.

Try to get in touch with as much local French students as you can! They're friendly but not always keen on temporary friendships.
