We liked the Irish bar The Pale, not far from the uni. The chateaux are definitely not to be missed, and of course Paris is around an hour by TGV.

Sometimes the tutors were a little tricky to get hold of. I found the French, all French, teaching a fantastic way of not only learning the language but also living uni life like the local students do.
