Housing
Type of housing: I lived in a student foyer not too far from school
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Foyer
Why?
I think the foyer situation was ideal. Really I lived in a magnificent area on Boulevard Saint Michel right across from the Luxembourg Gardens. In terms of bang for my buck I don't think I could have done any better!

You get absolutely no help with housing from the Sorbonne. If possible try to get into a foyer if not then just go and hoof it looking for places in the city. Becareful with the areas you end up in though!

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
First, student housing is a fairly foreign concept in Paris and so the facilities are very limited. Second, although it is difficult to live completely on one's own in a foreign country, one learns so much about that country: how to shop, cook, deal with bills, government, etc.

I cannot say much as I am not even sure that Paris IV even provides housing.

Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
My second semester in Paris, spent as an intern and an Internships in Francophone Europe program participant, I lived alone in an apartment which was far more conducive to my schedule at that time than living with a family had been while I studied at the Sorbonne. Different situations called for different needs.

Living with a host could not have been more beneficial for my well-being. The woman I lived with was older, had grandchildren (whom I baby-sat and gave English lessons) and regularly hosted foreign visitors. She taught me how to knit, helped me understand the election process better, and connected me with her daughter and her daughter's friends who made me feel welcome in France. It was much easier to then transition into living on my own after spending my first few months in the care of a host.

The University Paris IV-Sorbonne doesn't help much with the accomodation but fortunately, I had help from the German Bureau for Academic Exchange DAAD who provided all necessary information.

My host family was great. The people were incredibly nice, and it definitely helped improve my language skills.
