Montpellier is just one big student party. Drinks on the terraces especially in place Jean Jaures were usually a precursor to going out. We'd usually go to the clubs open into the small hours a little outside of town, either with friends, taxis or hitching. The clubs all used to be free so it didn't get too expensive. I think that has changed now. In town we'd go to Le Fizz- a tiny place that always amused us. I think that we just had a great time because that's what we wanted although I think it would be hard not to have fun in Montpellier. Fete de la Musique june 21, beaujolias nouveau night the last Thursday in November, Bastille day 14 July are all great national parties. In MOntpellier there is also a dance and an arts festival. Operas and Ballet can be seen at the Opera building. Sitting out on the Place de la Comedie is great for daytime drinks and the compulsory people watching. The square behind the post office building and the other little one behind the inside market building are good little finds too,

Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
Be friendly and nice to your adviser, he/she will be of great help during the year, but not at the beginning when all the new students give him/her headache!

Final comments
Montpellier is THE town to go study for a year! Its very close to the Mediterranean, close to Spain, Italy, and the Cote d'Azur. Its a student town full of energy, life, and parties. Try to get to know locals through club activities, its hard to do so in school. Travel, travel, travel. Dont study too much - you wont remember your studying later on, but going to have a beautiful day at the beach or hiking in the mountains. Email me for any advice you might wanna get!

Academic
Course recommendations
Stay away from M. Brunet. M. Boucris is amazing. The introductary courses are very large and impersonal but if you are brave enough to go further, you will find great teachers and smaller classes.

Personal comments
It's not fair to rate assessment -- it differs widely depending on the teacher. The grading was very challenging, sometimes arbitrary, but the American equivilence with the U of M program is very generous. It's no walk in the park, but isn't that what higher education is supposed to be?
