It wasn't necessarily the instruction that helped me (especially as the second semester had almost no lessons due to strike) but I made french friends which greatly improved my spoken french, especially slang and fluency.

The Arvor and Theatre National de Bretagne cinemas were the best places for intelligent, independent sub-titled films, as well as great film series, festivals and short film nights. It was cinema heaven.
