Definitely go to the market on saturday mornings in Place des Lices, and have a gallette saucisse (local delicacy!) have coffee at Scoop or Zing, go to Pyms for a decent club night, but a thursday on Rue St Michel (Rue de la Soif) is a must at some point!! Go and see Stade Rennais play, and visit other places in Brittany, its so easy and cheap on the train, St Malo is lovely as is Brest, and Paris is not far at all.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
Although it was very small it was newly renovated, always clean with en suite bathroom, over the road from uni buildings and a metro stop which took me into town in 5 mins. So convenient and with CAF only 105 euros a month.

Not all university accommodation was as good as mine, I had friends in alot more basic rooms, with shared bathrooms (no toilet seats) and much older buildings. Thats said they were liveable and even cheaper than mine (130 euros a month without CAF)

It wasn't necessarily the instruction that helped me (especially as the second semester had almost no lessons due to strike) but I made french friends which greatly improved my spoken french, especially slang and fluency.

Main source of funding:
Government assistance
Other sources of funding:
Government assistance<br> An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work
Personal spending habits
I spent more on food and drink because my room was tiny and there was no common recreation areas in halls/on campus so going out for coffee or lunch was an essential activity to allow me to get out and see friends. Alcohol is more expensive in bars especially as there is no student union or student nights at bars/clubs.

I had to pay for the internet in halls!! Definitely would recooment signing up for CAF, its really easy and halved my rent. You just need to supply photocopies of your EHIC card, passport and evidence of your residence.

Personal recommendation
Go into halls, they're not bad at all, you can always move out if you don't like it, but its better to make friends first and halls are a great way to do that. Go out and meet other erasmus people, try and make friends from Rennes, they can show you around and help you get the best out of the town!!

Final comments
Its cheapest to fly to Paris Charles de Gaulle and get the train, you'll have to get the metro from CDG to Montparnasse. To go south you have to go via Paris too. Don't worry too much about the courses or how well you're doing, its better to get out there and speak French!!! I did CIREFE classes too which are helpful and free for one semester. Enjoy yourself.
