Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
I had such a great time with my host family, that I've actually asked to stay with them for the second semester. They offer so much love and excitement. Plus, you're really forced to speak french all of the time and be apart of the culture.

Personal comments
Staying with a host family has been a great experience and I would suggest anyone studying abroad to do the same. It's the best opportunity to get involved, learn about the culture, and improve speaking capabilities.

Being mixed in with a lot of international students, french was the only language that we could use to cross communicate. So pretty much everyone was forced to speak french at the university. I personally loved meeting so many different people who have come from around the world to study the french language. Not only did I learn a lot from my french classes, but I also learned quite a lot from these other students. The classes I took did help to improve my vocabulary and language skills. The professors were all willing to help and encouraged our continuation into the french studies.

I loved the program and the people that I met! It was a very cultural experience and I think the professors tried hard to accommodate for all the different nationalities.

Final comments
Be sure to explore Brittany and Normandy (the beach is also pretty close by). I think it's real important to get to know your surroundings and the area in which you live. Don't forget to bring a raincoat and umbrella as it rains a lot in Rennes! And be ready to taste some seafood - the area is known for its fresh fish!

Personal spending habits
I think I just wasn't used to paying for everything on my own. When at home or at the university in the states, everything was already paid for.

Make sure to try and take advatange of any student discounts (if you're a student of course!). Travel by train can be a lot cheaper if you buy a student travel membership in France.
