We were inegrated into the CIREFE program, which offers French courses to foreign students. If your level was advanced you could take regular university classes, but that was not made very clear.

It's different, but get used to it. It is better to be pass/fail, I think, than having grades transfer, since there is no allowance for cultural adjustment
We were studying English Literature from a French view point. Clearly the French students couldn't pick everything up as quickly as we could because it wasn't their native language. Therefore some subjects were a bit basic, but nevertheless the scope of subjects was exceptional.

Not really - it is up to the individual to make the effort.
Things may have changed since I was there, but I had a lot of difficulty figuring out such simple things as how to register for a class. Things were very chaotic compared with classes in the United States. Just don't panic--ask other students for advice, and everything will probably work out fine.

I do feel that basing a grade solely on one exam at the end of a semester is not the ideal way of evaluating a student's performance.
