Housing
Type of housing: Apartment, then with family.
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
The overall experience of living with a Swiss family enabled me to learn a great deal about the Swiss way of life. I also had the opportunity to speak French at home as well as at University, as the family could not speak English.

Personal comments
Accommodation provided by the University was not acceptable, as the building was very dark and run down, and I was worried about my personal safety. My first room was too expensive at 850 CHF per month, without the cost of meals or a kitchen to cook my own meals in! However I have thoroughly enjoyed living with the Swiss family.

It was frequently difficult to find situations where I could speak French since many people in Switzerland are already fluent in English and enjoy the opportunities to practise it with a native speaker. I found it quite off putting to be responded to in English when speaking French and actually found I spoke French most frequently with the many German-speakers who were also in Lausanne to learn French. (This may explain why I seemed to have picked up a German accent in my spoken French!)

Personal recommendation
A wonderful Location at the banks of Lake Geneva with a wide variety of subjects to chose in University. L. is the youngest town of CH because of the many students, male and female.

Final comments
In summer you need to explore the Lake Geneva region and the Tessin. In winter go skiing in the alpes. In emergency most people understand french, german and italien because these are the three languages of CH. English is more difficult to find (no joke!).

One place definitely not to be missed is La Barbare near the cathedral, which serves the best hot chocolate anywhere!! The central refectory, known affectionately as 'la banane' is very tasty and healthy and very good value for money. In town, Manora's great for good and healthy food when you're on a budget and the Bleu Lézard and Les Brasseurs are good bars. The city's beautiful so the view from virtually anywhere's great and in Ouchy you've got both a lake and mountains to look at!!
