Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
Sometimes its disgusting, the walls are thin like paper etc. but you geht to know a lot of new people - it is easier to make friends when you live in a student hostel

Personal comments
I lived at Beaulieu, that is a huge campus with a lot of student homes. Normally 40 persons share a kitchen and two bathrooms. There is no community room and you have to eat in your own room and everybody has to bring its own dishes etc. But it is green outside, there is a library, TV-room, computer room, sports facilities etc.

Academic
Course recommendations
The french university system is very different in comparison with the german one. Courses last normally three hours, there is hardly any interaction between the students and the professor. The libraries are not well equiped because french students take a lot of notes and have to know what they learn in the courses, the are not used to work alone on a theme.

More Travaux Dirigés-courses, with less people and more interaction. No 3-hours courses, 2 hours are enough!

Final comments
At the beginning you have to do a lot of administration work. Bring a lot of passport-fotos, copies of your passport, an E128 sheet for the health-insurance and an international birth certificate. In France everybody has access to a housing-fund called CAF. This means that you can get a part of the money back that you pay for the housing. Get more informations at www.caf.fr

Personal spending habits
I wanted to visit the Bretagne, so I spent more money on traveling around and of course I wanted to stay in contact with friends at home which means higher telephone costs. Unfortunately there are no telephone lines in the student hostels, I had to buy a mobile and calling from a mobile is more expansive.

Personal comments
I never had problems to communicate with french people when I went out but at the beginning it was rather difficult to follow the courses (special language). But I improved and foreign students just have to do oral exams which makes the situation much easier.
