Personal spending habits
I think on average prices are a little higher than in Belgium, but e.g. you can eat at university for only 2,6 euros. Telephone (mobile) tariffs are quite more in France.

In comparison to Belgium France is less developed in the use of internet. Fortunately there is an internetroom for foreign people.

Personal recommendation
Don't expect a big university with lots of facilities for the students, lots of parties everywhere, lots of student's movements. Lille1 is a good, friendly university if you are looking for a nice place to study, to meet other foreign students (there are about 300 Erasmus students every year, so it's fine to know everyone), to improve your French, to travel in the neighborhood, ...

Academic
Course recommendations
(Maybe I'm pretty critical. I always compare things with the situation at my home university. I suppose people can't complain about Lille1 but in some cases Ghent is better. ;) ) Ask French students if you can copy their notes. I'm sure it will be fine for them. (As most of the times there you only have to study your notes, it is important to have good notes of course.)

Haven't had any exams yet. Do know that they sometimes only ask one question so you 'd better study everything.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
Lille1 is about 6 km away from the city center. It is easy to stay on 5 minutes by walk to the faculty, but unfortunately there not much to do on the campus (except for the Erasmus parties). The rooms are quite small. There are only few communal rooms such as a study room or a relaxation room.

One thing to know is that you can rent a room on the campus from the International Relations office, but this 'll cost you 40 euros more then if you rent directely from the housing agency "crous" (157 euros). In the city center there is a house called "la maison bleue". It's a house with 18 rooms for Erasmus students. You pay about 270 euros, but I think it's worth paying that.

As I told before, Lille1 is about 6 km from the city center. The metro (15 minutes) only is in service till 0.15 am. You can have great fun, but you somethings have to seek for it.
