Personal spending habits
It really depends on what you spend your money on - what you choose to buy. The Euro is stronger than the dollar, so goods can be more expensive. The only thing that you may spend more money on is a cellphone/telephone calls if you're making overseas phone calls. Local calls are very reasonable.

I love the Tea Room and Bar Porrione. The Tea Room is great for a mellow night and Bar Porrione is the best place for cheap vino at night. Tutto Pizza and Pizzaland have the best pizza al taglio in the city.

I had many American friends which made my learning slower than it would have been if I was with only Italians. Still, I progressed a lot thanks to the course and the wonderful city.

Course recommendations
I preferred the tutorials run by the University of California, but the courses were pretty good. I was put in intensive language instruction so I learned things quite quickly.

Being already pretty fluent in the language I wanted to study in Italy to experience new things and to possibly learn new things inside and outside of the classroom.
