Several good bars at the city center, and a busy night life, dominated by students, on the Overpoortstraat and surroundings. Culture club should not be missed as the best club in the city. Gentse Feesten in July is the main event of the year and you surely can't miss it, since it is 10 days of music, art and culture in the streets, when the city is highly crowded. Check out Limonada in the center of the city, great cosy place.

Housing
Type of housing: A room exchange
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: A room exchange
Why?
A better social experience, by having a closer contact with the people from the other rooms, also "living abroad" as students.

Personal comments
The housing was not the cleenest of places (although the common areas were clean at least once a week by a house maid), but had all the needed facilities. The rooms were fairly costed and in no way small, although the house was in an already quite old building. Combined with a good location (7 minutes by bycicle to University), however, it was an overall good housing.

Gent is located in the Flemmish region of Belgium, where Dutch is the native language. However, since almost everyone, of all ages, speaks very good English, it is very easy to adapt and communicate with everyone, students and locals alike

I wish I had known...
Nothing really in particular. It might be advisable to start making contacts for housing before arriving in Gent itself, in case you are doing this particularly.

Good environment, of teachers and colleagues alike. The courses are overall fairly demanding, and the atmosphere is trully international, especially with people from other european countries.

Final comments
If you are planning on going for an international experience, you might already know this, but it helps a lot to interact, since the beginning, with as many other groups of people as possible. They will help you overcome most of your problems initially (all the small bureocracies) and become excellent friends and travelling partners later on. The social life was perhaps the most important part of my exchange experience, so be prepared for meeting new and different people from a lot of other places. Guranteed fun! ;)
