The problem in Amsterdam is we're "stuck" in the small international student community since almost none of us speaks Dutch. So, we all do everything together, it is great, but there aren't a lot of mixing with the locals.

i got lucky to be in a drom divided in appartements of four people, which is nicer to live in than just a room-or a shared room- with the facilities at the end of the hall. I have a living room, so I can juts hang around there, or have some private time in my personal room. It is a good solution for me. The main problem was the relations with my roomates which were not always easy. I thought it could have been cheaper but housing in Amsterdam is one tricky issue. Overall, I am pretty satisfied, I could have found much worse.

there is no need to speak Dutch to go to Holland, they all speak an amazing English. The hardest thing is to stand hearing the Dutch language which is far from being the most beautiful language in the world;) Apart from that, speaking English with other international students do not especially improve your vocabulary, just your fluency, or easiness. Basically, we just 1000 words, it's a basci English. SO, practice and keep learning by yourself, because you need to be more subtle in your academic papers!

Try to look at the courses from the ISHSS. They have more choice and you can get to them through the UvA. I actually followed my courses there.

Don't freak out! You have tough moments, but that's how life is. And that's what you do there, you fully live (and, also work!Dutch teachers are demanding!)it is not just fun..
