UCL: global university with plenty of opportunities
Laura P
United Kingdom, Undergraduate
Environmental Sciences, 2022
Overall
UCL is an international institution where it is easy to feel welcome to. It defines itself as a global university, and it truly is.
The courses and the lecturers are generally very well prepared, and available to talk to the students.
The services provided by the university, such as the library and the careers office, are extremely useful and easily available.
In regards to student life, not only one benefits from the exciting life in London, full of the event all the year-round, but the university itself and the student union offers a wide range of activities. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that by being part of UCL students have access to the services and activities of the University of London too (the latter is a league of several London's Universities).

Personal recommendation
Certain programs at UCL were very rigorous, others, like the ARt depts. gave students time to work independantly and enjoy other aspects of life. I encourage anyone looking to meet people and live in a city to GO TO LONDON!!!

Most of the time the ERASMUS exchange is possible only if the student has already got a good knowledge of the language he/she will have to speak in the host university, which can be a problem if you goal is to learn (or improve) this language. Otherwise, I had some problems at the beginning but everyone (Professors, other students,...) were aware of that and helped me improve my skills.

Personal spending habits
The cost of living in London is much higher than in the States, BUT, there are always good deals out there for students. Just carry your student card around, be cheeky and ask for student discounts, and pretty soon, you will be familiar with all cinemas that offer student discounts!

In the department I was in (Electronic Engineering) there were some basic courses (4 or 5 courses) for all the students and some optional courses you could choose (4 or 5 to choose among 10).

Personal comments
The final project we had to do and the end of the Master was 90% of the time an academic project. I would have prefered to do a project in an industrial company.
