I think my knowledge in English was pretty good before the exchange year as I was used to having lectures in English at my home university as well. I think I improved most at conversational skills, coping better slang etc. after the year.

The work and activities at the International Centre was great through the year. Also the location and the opportunities for travel (to the Rockies, hiking, skiing etc.) were great.

I recommend you to go there a few weeks earlier than the term starts, as you can enjoy the summer & all the festivals in Edmonton. Also it's easier to find a cheap accommodation when you start looking before everybody else :)

I wanted to try and experience everything new and travel as much as possible. Also I got used to the local lifestyle which was more 'eating out orientated' than the one in Finland.

Whyte Avenue was the best area in Edmonton. That's were all the cool shops, cafes and nightlife is. There's also a very good vegetarian cafe/restaurant called Cafe Mosaics, and a cheap second hand record store, Blackbird's. The best atmosphere for booklovers is found at the Chapters. (on Whyte as well.)
The best live music place is The Sidetrack Cafe in down town.

¿Por qué?
It was cheaper compared to student residences. Also, I like the fact living in a condo with a couple of nice roommates felt more like home than just renting a room at a residence. However, next time I would choose the location better, as living far away from campus and the city was sometimes not so convenient.
