I highly recommend School of English at Leeds University to everyone. Leeds is a very relaxed city and a place where it is easy to feel like home. I advise everyone to try living with English students as this might be the best chance to get to know them. It is also very important to get to know the other students in your modules as soon as possible, the best way is simply to talk to someone on the first day. Getting to know the other international students is much easier, it is too easy to just hang around with them all the time. Enjoy your studies in Leeds!

Housing
Type of housing: Student Flats
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I would prefer to rent a student house on the private rental market if I was to go back to Leeds because it might be a bit cheaper.

I was very lucky to live with only English students as this is the best way to learn the language properly. My flatmates became close friends and they were also a great help in the beginning as they would assist me with getting to know my way around Leeds. The rent was twice the amount of what I would have paid for the same standard of housing in Norway, but housing is quite expensive in the U.K. We had cleaners coming by every week, but I would have prefered to do it myself. My overall experience with the accomodation was very good.

Leeds University is a place where many cultures and backgrounds meet, you will really enjoy the time spent there. Also, if you ever go, dont forget to visit York a close city and really worth the visit.

Their international office is a great support. Maybe the accomodation office could consider the preferences of the students more or if that's not possible just shorten the preference-list! Another comment is that I think a broad education is good and maybe they should force students to take a few courses outside their departement!

Academic
Course recommendations
I really liked the system of seminars, at home I only have lectures. The only comment for me is that all my courses stayed within my departement and I would have liked to had more courses, to broaden my education like I have at home.

I am not reallly fond of just essays as evaluation, I think an exam is good because it makes you study the entire course and not just concentrate on your essay topics. If you just have to essays, it's easy to skip the lectures that are not about your topic! Though one essay or a few during courses are good because you get to focus and you learn a lot about a specific subject that interests you!

Personal spending habits
I spent less on food and nightlife since these things were cheaper in Leeds. Housing was a major expense whereas travelling could be done in an affordable way, I spent more on this because I travelled a lot more than I would at home.

Personal comments
I thought my money would last longer in the U.K. than in Norway as things are generally less expencive. The living costs turned out to be a little much, and I did not try to save money to begin with, which is always a mistake. A good advice is to find a part-time job as soon as possible as it will help your money last longer and it can also be a great experience.
