Housing
Type of housing: hall of residence
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: hall of residence
Why?
The atmosphere was excellent. There were a lot of English students. Moreover the typical hierarchy of the place (warden, president of the junior common room) is something which is typically English and was was worth it.

The accomodation office within the University was really helpful. It took them two days to find me a hall of residence that fulfilled my requirements. I didn't want to live amongst other international students because I was eager to improve my English so the Hall of residence was great. I met great people and the food and the activities provided were fantastic. Unforgettable !

There were some jazz clubs like the Band on the Wall that were OTT. The Infinity was THE nightclub. The Trafford Centre for shopping. If you are a football fan (as I am) you have to pay a visit to Old Trafford and go to Moss Side to watch City (tickets are cheaper). Also Rusholme and its famous Curry Mile where I had the hottest curry I've ever had !!!

Personal spending habits
Food is definitely more expensive in Manchester than in Belgium and my various trips to London were even worse regarding the subject. I tried to limit my phone calls to the family but it was difficult especcialy when you got the blues. Nightlife was pretty similar except on certain 'special' occasions.

If your stomach is ready, you can apply for a catered hall but it has its drawbacks. You gotta be ready to face absolutely dreadful dishes and the schedules are tight.

Academic
Course recommendations
Just don't choose your courses before getting there. I was lucky because my first choice (in Brussels) was not definitive. You definitely have to attend the lectures before selecting them.

Personal comments
Facilitating the contacts between international and local students because the latter usually treat us like lazy clubbers who don't care about the lectures. Some international students are really struggling with the lectures and the language itself so it would be useful to help them. To share your notes with an Erasmus student is not a CRIME !

Personal recommendation
The assistance provided for the international students is tremendous. The location isn't really ideal regarding the weather but it's a lively city which represents England at its best. It's easy reaching distance of Scotland and Ireland which are superb places as well.

I was ok in English before going to Manchester as I had already gone to the US and Ireland but to be able to use it as an everyday language is a great asset and I learned more in 9 months than troughout my academic courses at school and university in Belgium.
