I wish I had known...
Remember that the houses are not isolated and that it can get cold during the winter (especially at night). I already knew this and brought a thick jacket that proved to be very usefull. It gets cold in between May and July (when I was there it even snowed on the Siemensberg, which is a mountain next to Stellenbosch)

Make sure you select the right courses because although most look the same on paper, they differ a lot in difficulty in practice!

I wish I had known...
1) The country is not dangerous, don't buy any bulletproof vest ;-) 2) The African culture has been mostly suppressed by the regime, very hard to get contact, don't hope to learn about African culture (unless you travel outside SA which I did) 3) Buying a car (not renting, even to a particular) is much cheaper 4) Saving money is crucial to allow for lots of travel opportunities 5) The Business School campus is not the same as the Main one..to have more student life, rent to Stellenbosch or Cape Town!

I went to SA for the Travel, Culture and Fun parts. On Travel, came out EXTREMELY happy because met other people to travel with and did things would not have done alone. On Culture, was desappointed because the African culture doesn't show up easely. As for general infrastrucre, note that the Cape Town area really feels like San Francisco, it's great! As for the Social life, I was VERY happy too because I met some great people with whom I am keeping contact (3 months later, they are all coming to Brussels for the Week end!). Anyway..great travel, great life..enjoy!

Stellenbosch University is known as the oldest university in South Africa

Urban and Regional Planning, 2016
Overall
I started my academic career at Stellenbosch University with my Bachelor's degree: Development and Environmental Studies. My majors were Geography and Environmental Studies as well as Public and Development Management.

The enthusiasm of the lecturers persuaded me to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree: Public and Development Management.

My strong passion for the Built Environment persuaded me to further my studies and enrolled for the Masters degree: Urban and Regional Planning. Throughout my Masters degree, I developed close relationships with my lecturers account to their knowledge and passion for the discipline.

Stellenbosch University is an excellent university, often receiving numerous awards and located in one of the most beautiful towns.

Careers
The University offers numerous opportunities for students where students can work as Mentors, Tutors and administrative staff to gain work experience.

Due to enrolling for the Honours degree in Public and Development Management, I was offered an internship at the Western Cape Government: Department of Social Development, which I soon resigned from as my fast learning abilities and passion for the built environment assisted me in gaining a job as an Assistant Property Manager.

Go, but only if you can follow graduate courses, because these are in English, the rest is in Afrikaans

Stellenbosch University is an Afrikaans university. This means that the medium of tuition is Afrikaans and not English. For Dutch and Flemisch speaking students this is not really a problem. Graduate courses are offered in English though, so only go if you are at graduate (that is above ba) level. Book your trips here, that'll save you a lot of money

A well-rounded university experience located in a beautiful town
Tasmin W

Overall
The University of Stellenbosch provides a very well-rounded university experience. The university is situated in a beautiful town that is easily accessible by foot/bike. There is an extensive range of courses to choose from, with very committed lecturers that are very knowledgeable and eager to educate the younger generations. The university incorporates sports and social clubs into each students experience which allows students to build relationships and hobbies for anything they are passionate about. My four years spent at Stellenbosch were the best four years of my life! I would definitely recommend this university for anyone looking to study in South Africa - for academic excellence and, all in all, a wonderful student lifestyle!
