The dialect spoken by some of the local people in Sunderland is VERY strange in the beginning but it gets easier to understand them after a while.

Personal spending habits
Using mobile phones (even local connections) is much more expensive in the UK than in Finland. The social life in Sunderland was very lively so it made me spend more. Local travel is cheap, but then long distance travel (by trains and coaches) isn't.

Overall
I wish I had known...
How much cheaper and nicer the private housing in Sunderland is, compared to living on campus. Secondly, that I would have love to stay there longer!

Most people loved it.

(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
This is the place for you if you want make friends from all over the world, have loads of fun and in the meanwhile, study some pretty interesting subjects. Sometimes the bureaucratic way of dealing things in the university can be annoying but you just have to patient. Everything happens slower than in Finland.

Final comments
Sunderland is a great place to live: not too small, not too big. And it only takes about 30 mins to Newcastle by Metro. The weather can be pretty dull sometimes and the wind is very strong occasionally. The city is 3 hours from Edinburgh, so Scotland is worth visiting.
If possible, take a laptop with you when you go to Sunderland. They'll get all the student houses connected to the Internet in spring 2004. There are not enough computers in the university libraries, so an own laptop will save you a lot of frunstration!

Academic
Course recommendations
If you have studied business for more than a year and your English is good, don't waste your time on levels 1 and 2, but take courses from the third level (even though the teachers could be saying that they're too difficult.. they're not!)

Personal comments
The house was old but still ok. Not very comfortable and the heating was not on during the nights, so it was rather freezing insides. Still, a very good way to make friends and to socialize (I had 10 flatmates)!

The students union club, Manor Quay, turned out to be my favorite. The football matches are also worth checking out.
