I wish I had known...
My personal packing experiences: I took WAY TO MANY books with me (you really find stuff to read at once, if you like reading! - if you ever have the time, anyway.. :-)); but I didn't take bedsheets or towels, which I could have used well. In general, don't take to much (I came with one suitcase and it was enough) and think of the warmth - you really only need one warm jacket and something for the occasional thunderstorms with rain (if you should ever choose to go out during one of these extraordinary phenomenons..), the rest of the time you will wear light clothing.

Austin is a very liberal city, with a lot of students and fun people, who do their best to "keep Austin weird" (as it says on many t-shirts!). In addition, the courses I took were of very high quality and really interesting. If that sounds appealing to you, then go for it!

I bought a bike in the beginning of the semester and used it ALL the time (I lived very close to campus, though).

If you are interested in the American Way of Life and you want to study at one of the best State Universities in the US - then the University of Texas at Austin is a very good choice! Texas is big, the people are friendly, the University is well-known, you can travel a lot, and all in all you have a lot of opportunities!

Book your flights very early, then you may get some discounts (maybe there are some student discounts too). A round trip ticket is also a very good idea (book all flights ahead, to go there and to come back), that makes it cheaper too. If you want to travel within the US (and there is a lot to see) book Youth Hostels or flights here in Austin over the Internet - you can get very good deals! - for example just USD 99,00 from Austin to Los Angeles with Southwest Airlines. Keep your luggage small, believe me! If you need a shirt, shoes or something else, you can buy it in Austin very cheap.

Campus life is very good. You always get to meet nice people, from many different places, it's very interesting. So always benefit from this international environment to meet lots of people and broaden your sense of world.

Texas is a nice place, where lots of beauties take place. You may want to visit some natural parks, such as Big Bend, and also beaches, e.g. South Padre Island.
If you are over there in February, don't miss Mardi Gras in New Orleans or even in Austin. You won't regret it.

The American way of living is quite different from Italan, but there are no particular things that MUST be known in advance (apart from the fact that cheating in exams is considered one of the worst things a person can do)

Don't stay all-day long at the university, go out and visit the city, there are a lot of interesting events going on in Austin: celebrations, job opportunities, places to eat well.. etc.

The best place to get to know people is on the street. Go out a lot and visit the second-hand bookstores, they are great.
