Personal comments
If money is important to you, stay at the dorms. Some people manage to survive there for 4 or 5 years!!! It's really difficult to find an appartment to share with other students. Also try to cook your own food. If you're at the dorm and the kitchen is really nasty, get a micro-wave and/or an electric range (second hand will be much cheaper)

Except for the MBA course, you really need to speak good Japanese. There are a few foreign teachers that teach in English, but mostly it's in Japanese.

Personal recommendation
If you come here to experience Japan, come. If it is for academic reasons, don't. Tsukuba is supposed to be one of the best universities in Japan, but it doesn't really show (at least at the graduate level).

Final comments
It's really difficult for foreign students to choose the university where they want to study. Specially if you have a Japanese-funded scholarship (even if it's only partially Japanese, as mine is), you won't be able to study at a private university, which are much better (or so I've heard).

Academic
Course recommendations
From what I hear technical studies are OK, but anything related to Humanities or Social Sciences tends to have a so-so level. Anything you want to learn you'll have to do it mostly by yourself, specially if your Japanese is not fluent.

La Clave has a latin party once a month; otherwise there is no dancing scene. Frontier is a very popular place for foreign guys cause that's were Japanese girls go to find a foreign boyfriend. There are some bars that are nice (no specific recommendation) but they never seem to get a lot of visitors.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
The rooms at the dorm are really small, and 95% of them don't even have a shower in the same building.

Unless you get a room in one of the newer buildings, it's really, really bad, but cheap. The newer buildings are OK for Japanese standarts, but maybe not for Western ones.
