I wish I had known...
How much money I was going to go through in travelling, going out and drinking. Not that it would have made a difference though - I still would have gone even if I had known this. I just might have tried to save more money.

I would recommend it so incredibly highly. I had one of the best experiences of my life, and I will always remember it and the friends I made there. It has given me so many other opportunities - to visit people in their home country, to host people in mine. A beautiful city with a gorgeous university and a charming place with a real vibrancy for student life. I can't imagine anyone not liking it.

Highly, but it depends on a person's prime motivation in going to Sweden. I spoke Swedish and had a specific area of studies in mind, so the place was sheer perfection for me.

Just be aware that any experience overseas in a different culture is what YOU make it. You get out of it what you put in. I strongly urge any travellers to Sweden to make any attempt (however small) to learn the local language - while it is true that Swedes demonstrate an ability to speak excellent English, knowing some Swedish will help you to feel more at ease in social situations of all kinds, and they are greatly impressed to meet a foreigner who has made some kind of effort to learn their "little" language. It's not all that different from English, and not hard to achieve a high level of competence once the initial difficulties are overcome.

Get involved in the nation life and live in a student corridor. It might be your only chance to speak with actual swedes.

It's not as cold as everyone thinks. Winter coats are fairly inexpensive here and serious snow clothes are seldom necessary. Take advantage of cheap flights to other European destinations such as England, Spain or Greece.

I wish I had known...
It would have been nice to know more about the local culture, nightlife and accommodations… just to get a better feel for things, more of a comfort level than anything else. This could have easily been done had I know someone there or who had been there recently.

Overall the university met and even exceeded my expectations. The only point that I would like to make is that if finances are a major concern, it may be best to either save more than you anticipate to spend, or look around.

I can honestly say that this international experience has changed my life for the better. My perceptions of what goes on the in the world are not just from my nations point of view any longer. Having friends from many different countries and wanting them to be successful and happy, forces one to look at things from their point of view. This experience opens a whole new world and I have yet to meet anyone who has thought otherwise. Go with an open mind and you'll enjoy the experience.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Apartments are not much more expensive than student housing and it would allow me to share it with some friends that I pick. On the other hand I could pick the location.

Sudent accomodation in Uppsala is very good but some campuses are a bit far. I would avoid living in Polacksbacken for instance. If you are sent there try to discuss it with your coordinator. If you can speak with exchange students who go to your university while you are at theirs you could try to swap rooms, that's the only way you'll get a room in the Nations dorms where there's usually a huge waiting list. The best Nation dorms are the ones of Kalmar, Ostogota, Snerikes and Stockholms.

Visby is a world heritage site and is a unique place to live and study. The master's program in Cultural Heritage is very independent, lots of reading and researching. But rewarding all the same. The people are really friendly and I have enjoyed my time here.
