At the Electric Driveline Department, we are heading an exciting journey with inhouse design of transmission and electrical motor for the pure electric vehicles in order to support (COMPANY NAME) Cars electrification strategy of 50% pure electric vehicles 2025. With this responsibility comes new demands to improve CAE model reliability on a component level in order to shorten the development loops. In order to improve the CAE models, the need of new methods for physical testing need to be developed.
Accurate measurements of load, strain and temperature are essential in order to improve confidence of CAE models for the design of electric machines. Typical sensors for these applications such as strain gauges, thermocouples or RTD temperature sensors are all electrically conductive which makes them sensitive to electromagnetic interference (EMI). In addition sensor installation becomes an issue when the size and amount of sensors needed to obtain a trustworthy model validation increases.
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing technology have shown promising results for in-situ measurements in high voltage environments. They hold several key advantages compared to conventional sensors such as EMI immunity, small size and the ability to measure multiple physical quantities.
The objective of the thesis is to:
* Perform a pre-study on the subject
* Propose a solution for a test setup with FGB sensors embedded in an electrical machine
* Perform calibration of the test equipment
* Run test and use test results to validate a CAE model
The outcome of the thesis is expected to be a proven test method that works to give data input to CAE models.
For this position we are looking for 1-2 students who are studying MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or similar. Useful skills: Matlab/Python, 3D-CAD (Catia V5 or similar) FEM/CFD analysis. Previous experience with measurement technology, optical fibers and gratings is a plus.
