Purpose: The Associate Scientist will support the development of new process and materials characterization capabilities, working at the intersection of materials formulations, process engineering, and physiochemical properties characterization. This position offers hands-on experimental experience, cross-functional collaboration, and rich growth opportunities in a fast-paced R&D environment.
You will:
* Plan, execute, and document experiments to characterize new formulations and processing methods.
* Apply a range of analytical techniques to assess physiochemical properties (e.g., particle size distribution, rheology, thermal analysis, spectroscopy, and microstructure characterization).
* Develop and optimize characterization methods and workflows to support formulation and process development.
* Collect, organize, and analyze data; summarize findings in clear technical reports and presentations.
* Collaborate with formulations, process engineering, and quality/compliance teams to translate characterization results into actionable process improvements.
* Maintain accurate and compliant lab notebooks, instrument records, and supporting documentation.
* Troubleshoot experimental issues, improve experimental design, and contribute to DOE (design of experiments) studies where appropriate.
* Support scaling activities and pilot runs by providing characterization insights and ensuring reproducibility.
* Stay current with relevant literature and best practices; participate in team meetings and knowledge-sharing sessions.
Qualifications
Required
* Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Pharmaceutical Science, or a closely related field.
* 0-2 years of hands-on laboratory or internship experience in materials formulation, characterization, or related areas.
* Familiarity with basic characterization techniques (e.g., DSC/TGA, FTIR, UV-Vis, particle size analysis, viscosity/rheology, microscopy) and a strong willingness to learn new methods.
* Strong data analysis skills and proficiency with common software tools (e.g., Excel; basic data visualization). Experience with statistical concepts or DOE is a plus.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey complex results clearly to cross-functional teams.
* Attention to detail, strong organization, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative environment.
* Safety-minded with a proactive approach to lab discipline and quality.
Preferred
* Direct hands-on experience with additional characterization methods (e.g., XRD, NMR, Raman, zeta potential, DSC, TGA) and/or formulation development.
* Exposure to design experiments (DOE), quality systems, or GMP/GLP environments.
* Experience with data analysis programming (e.g., Python, R) or specialized software (e.g., JMP, Minitab).
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and communicate results to non-specialists.
