The (COMPANY NAME) Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) provides support to the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia by supplying reliable and timely information about the surface and geographical location of coca bush crops. This information serves as input to strengthen national policies, to the development of coca crop control strategies and to promote comprehensive development in the country. The UNODC Office provides technical assistance within the framework of the "Illicit Crop Monitoring Programme" (ICPM) located at UNODC Headquarters in Vienna. The Coca Crops Monitoring Report is part of the "UNODC Assistance Programme to the Implementation of the Action Plan for the Strategy for the Fight against Drug Trafficking and Reduction of Surplus Coca Cultivation, 2xxx - xxx5" (ELCNyRCEC)", financed by the Delegation of the European Union in Bolivia.
This programme was designed to assist in the fight against drugs and encompasses the following areas of intervention: i) Coca crops monitoring, ii) Regional cooperation and technical legal assistance, and iii) Validation of information of destruction/incineration of seized illegal drugs and strengthening of forensic laboratories, iv) Study on coca crops yields in Bolivia, v) Study on coca-cocaine efficiency, vi) Container Control at the Land Port of Tambo Quemado and vii) Validation of the information on rationalization/eradication of surplus coca crops in Bolivia. Bolivia is the third coca producing country in the world. In 2018, the official figures reported 23,100 hectares under coca bush cultivation, which must be controlled and monitored.
Under this context, one (1) intern is required to assist with software and hardware maintenance of Projects Z68 and W98. The intern will also support various activities related to the preparation of the "Coca 2019 Annual Crop Monitoring Report". The intern will be stationed in La Paz, Bolivia.
The internship is for an initial period of three months (with the possibility of extension up to 6 months) starting March 2020, UNPAID and full time. Interns will work five days per week (40 hours) under the initial supervision of the Executive Associate to the Representantive of the UNODC Country Office in La Paz, Bolivia. In general, the intern will work mainly on the maintenance of software and hardware of the Z68 and W98 projects, as well as on specific tasks for the elaboration of the Monitoring Report 2019
Specifically, the intern will perform the following tasks that may include, but are not limited to
*Support in the automation of processes for the processing of satellite images and the quantification of coca crops in the ArcGis and Erdas software
*Assist in the organization of the information stored in the server of Projects Z68 and W98.
*Support in the control of equipment acquired by Projects Z68 and W98 by updating inventories and verifying equipment
*Support in the implementation of the geographic database in free and/or commercial software and the use of Geographic Information Systems.
*Assist in the maintenance of software and hardware of Projects Z68 and W98.
*Other tasks designated by the Executive Associate to the Representative

To qualify for an internship with the (COMPANY NAME) Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Spanish is an advantage.
