The mandate of the (COMPANY NAME) Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP's role as a regional development arm of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.
The (COMPANY NAME) Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Subregional Office for North and Central Asia (SONCA), located in Almaty, Kazakhstan, offers an internship opportunity for a minimum of four months with possible extension up to six months.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or section to which they are assigned.
SONCA covers nine ESCAP member States in North and Central Asia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan participates in the activities of SONCA as a member of the (COMPANY NAME) Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA).

Under the general guidance of the Head of Office and the direct supervision by a professional staff member, the intern will assist with conducting research and producing capacity building materials related to two sets of work outputs of SONCA in 2020, namely:
*Undertaking research and analysis on sector/ topic specific drivers and accelerators for sustainable economic transformation in North and Central Asia in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDG Framework (including econometric analysis, and analysis on SDG interlinkages); and
*Undertaking country and subregional research and analysis on Financing for Development needs and options guided by the UN Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF), and developing capacity development materials on INFF and various means for its operationalization in North and Central Asia (such as public financing efficiency and governance, domestic and external resource mobilization, capital market development, infrastructure financing, public-private partnerships, financial inclusion, foreign direct investment, official development assistance, remittance and climate finance, or gender and climate responsive budgeting)
In addition, regular duties of the intern will include assistance in compiling socioeconomic data; drafting and preparing official documents, speeches and presentations; assistance for conferences and meetings; and other activities upon request.

To qualify for an internship with the (COMPANY NAME) Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
a) have studied areas such as macroeconomics, finance, international economics, development, econometrics, applied statistics, business administration, regional studies that focused on countries of North and Central Asia, or related areas;
b) be computer literate in standard software applications;
c) have a keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
d) have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Russian is an asset.
