Chief Of Section, Conference Services

This position is located in the Multilingual Technology Section, Languages Service, Division of Conference Management, (COMPANY NAME) Office at Geneva.


Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

- Provides guidance to the Chief of Service, on policy matters relating to the Section, including appointments, promotion, outreach, internships and training.
- Plans and oversees the management of activities undertaken by the Section; supervises the work of the Contractual Work Unit, the Language Support Unit and the six Editorial and Desktop Publishing Units to ensure that documents and publications are processed to appropriate quality and quantity standards and in a timely fashion.
- Manages, supervises and carries out the work programme of the Section under his/her responsibility. Co-ordinates the work carried out by the Section; liaises with other sections in the Languages Service and with sections and units in other services to ensure optimal coordination within the Service and the Division. Oversees the day-to-day and long-term planning of work in light of workload projections, including the appropriate recruitment of temporary staff.
- Provides substantive input in the preparation of position papers and reports for presentation to intergovernmental bodies such as the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budget Questions, Committee for Programme Coordination, Economic and Social Council, the General Assembly and other policy-making organs, as appropriate.
- Contributes to the reporting to intergovernmental bodies on programme performance or on programmatic issues, as appropriate, particularly those presented in biannual and/or annual reports.
- Ensures that reports on the work of the Section are clear, objective and based on comprehensive data. Ensures that all outputs produced by the Section under his/her supervision meet required standards before completion to ensure they comply with the relevant mandates.
- Recruits staff for the Section. Including interviewing candidates for job opening and evaluating them, taking due account of geographical and gender balance and other institutional values;
- Manages, guides, develops and trains staff under his/her supervision. Carries out administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Section, including the supervision, monitoring and evaluation of all regular and temporary staff
- Fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Section and across organizational boundaries.
- Represents the Organization at inter-agency meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive-related issues. Participates in international, regional or national meetings and provides programmatic/substantive expertise on an issue, or holds programmatic/substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.
- Provides support in leading the development and implementation of document workflow improvements both within the Section and supporting the improvements Service-wide.Deputizes for the Chief of the Languages Service, as required.

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in humanities, languages, social sciences, business administration or management, or in a related field from a university or institution of equivalent status is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Success in a (COMPANY NAME) Language Competitive Examination (Translators, Editors, Verbatim-Reporters) is desirable. Diplomas or certificates in translation, edting and/or terminology would be an asset.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible professional experience in conference management or in the provision of language or language related services, including at least five (5) years of experience in managing teams of at least five (5) staff in international, regional or national institutions is required.
Experience in Project Management would be an asset.


English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.


Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
