Job Description:The apprentice role allows candidates to complete a sterile processing department technologist training program while learning on-the-job to develop industry-specific skills. As a member of the surgical team, the Sterile Processing Department personnel are responsible for assembling, cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing and/or storing procedure trays, surgical trays and equipment. Also assembles, distributes and/or delivers disposable and durable medical equipment, case carts and supplies to fill the needs of the Operating Room, Nursing Units, Ancillary Departments and clinics. Apprentices enrolled in the program will be integrated into the sterile processing team; upon successful completion of the training program the apprentice may be hired as a Sterile Processing Technologist. This position will function under the supervision of a preceptor, and reports to the Sterile Processing Department management. The work experience is related to the Apprentice's specific role and will support Intermountain Health's mission, vision, and values.

Job Essentials
* Attends Intermountain Health and Apprenticeship Program orientations, and completes all required paperwork and documentation before starting apprenticeship
* Attends scheduled departmental training, completes required training, and testing in a timely manner
* Completes all mandatory training as assigned
* Maintains good performance and attendance standing with Intermountain Health and apprenticeship program expectations
* Ensures the operating room and surgical items meet disinfection and sterilization criteria

* Operates and monitors sterilization equipment
* Disassembles carts and follows Universal Precautions for decontamination.
* Sterilizes, disinfects durable medical equipment and instruments, packages clean supplies and instruments, maintains records for all instruments and transports sterilized items to the floor.
* Assembles sterilized instruments and rechecks all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly checks power equipment.
* Takes measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
* Communicates the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.
* Responds to emergency situations by insuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
* Utilizes applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
* Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
* May be required to work overtime based on business need.
Minimum Qualifications
* Candidate must be accepted to either the Intermountain Health/FRCC (Front Range Community College) apprenticeship program and fulfill all pre-requisites specific to the program and Intermountain Health hiring requirements
* Candidates must speak, read, and write in English
* Intermountain Health caregivers must be in good performance standing upon acceptance to the apprenticeship program
* Legally authorized to work in the United States
* Candidate must have High School Diploma or GED

Physical Requirements:
Physical Requirements
* Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, sterile indicator tags, colors, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
* Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment and instruments with precision and accuracy. This includes computer use and typing for documentation, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
* Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to move instrument trays. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
* Need to walk and assist with obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
* May be expected to stand in a stationary position with personal protective equipment for an extended period of time.
