Job Description:

The (COMPANY NAME) Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the (COMPANY NAME) system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity is located in Montreal and is administered by UNEP. This internship is located at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, under the supervision of the Associate Public Information Officer and the overall guidance of Special Advisor, and in close collaboration with IT staff expanding the Action Agenda site, the Office of the Executive Secretary/the Sharm El-Sheikh to Kunming Action Agenda for Nature and People.

The IT development and production support - Action Agenda Internship has a start date of 15 March 2021 for a duration of three (3) months with a possibility of an extension depending on the needs of the Organization.

The Internship is UNPAID and full time.

Interns work five days per week (35 to 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities

The purpose of this internship is to assist the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) with the IT development and production support of the Sharm El-Sheikh to Kunming Action Agenda for Nature and People. The internship offers a good opportunity for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student to gain international work experience and become acquainted with the key issues, processes and decisions related to the implementation of one of the major (COMPANY NAME) multilateral environmental agreements. The Sharm El-Sheikh to Kunming Action Agenda for Nature and People, launched at the UN Biodiversity Conference 2018 - COP14, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, is an initiative spearheaded by the Governments of China and Egypt, with support of the CBD Secretariat. The initiative aims to build engagement with non-state actors through an online platform registry of commitments and actions. The development and production support of the online platform is meant to inform, inspire and showcase commitments, raising awareness on the urgency, ambition, and actions to reduce the drivers of loss of biodiversity and shift toward nature positive outcomes. Commitments from all types of non-state actors, meeting the established criteria, will be profiled, helping to catalyse integrated actions, partnerships and impact.

Under the supervision of the Associate Public Information Officer and the overall guidance of Special Advisor, and in close collaboration with IT staff expanding the Action Agenda site, the intern will:

1.Support the migration, and design of the new website for the Action Agenda in Drupal and test its functionality.
2.Support IT development of a network of partners for the Action Agenda, including setting up a knowledge network; and
3.Provide solutions and develop information systems and components to improve the vetting, sorting, profiling and recording of commitments.

Education

Applicants to the (COMPANY NAME) internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor 's level or equivalent);
(c) Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Technological awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology. Understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office. Actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks. Shows willingness to learn new technology.

Preferred area of study: Candidates from a wide range of disciplines are welcome for this post preferably with a combined degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Information Technology and/or Knowledge Management. The successful candidate must have an interest and experience in developing IT tools and components. Knowledge of vuejs, nodejs and mongodb or ability to learn and utilize quickly is an advantage. The candidate should also be able to familiarize him/herself with biological diversity and the IT program in a timely manner. He/she should enjoy working in a dynamic and multicultural environment.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
