Job Description:

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the (COMPANY NAME) system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The internship is with the Sustainable Tourism, Eco-innovation and Texile teams at UNEP, Economy Division, Paris, France. It is to start on 17 February 2020 and is for a duration of six months. Please do not apply if you are not available for the whole duration of the internship, at the set time and date.
The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work 35 hours five days per week.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the responsible Programme Officers, the intern will assist with the development of the communication and research activities of the Eco-innovation, Textile and Sustainable Tourism Programme projects. Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the individual's background as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
*Support the monitoring and reporting activities of the project as well as the development of reports
*Conduct desktop research to support the implementation of the private sector engagement
*Support data collection processes from engaged businesses, ensuring technical quality, and conducting preliminary analysis
*Assist the launch of the GHG and resource efficiency guideline and support the launch of a communication campaign to tackle single-use plastics in the tourism sector and the development of business case studies
*Assist in the development of presentations, newsletters and communication materials for advocating and promoting sustainable tourism, eco-innovation and textiles in international events, meetings or conferences
*Support the project website update and the knowledge management database of the IKI Tourism Project, as well as the eco-innovation project.

The intern will support the implementation of the following projects:

'Transforming Tourism Value Chains in Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to accelerate more resilient, resource efficient, low carbon development'.
The overarching goal of this project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase resource efficiency in three tourism value chains: food and beverages, accommodation, and, collectively, in meetings, incentives, conferences and events (known as MICE). The project analyses the respective value chains, prepare policy recommendations, and develop concrete action plans that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve resource efficiency in at least 100 business along the value chain. In addition, partners in the project will develop a monitoring and reporting system that will enable countries (Philippines, Dominican Republic, Mauritius, and Saint Lucia) to account for their achievements under international agreements.

*The One Planet Network and its programmes

The One Planet network has formed to implement the global commitments to accelerate the shift towards sustainable consumption and production in both developed and developing countries and to advance towards the Sustainable Development Goal 12. It is a multi-stakeholder partnership for sustainable development, generating collective impact through its six programmes: Public Procurement, Buildings and Construction, Tourism, Food Systems, Consumer Information, and Lifestyles and Education. The UN Environment Programme is a regular contributor to its One Planet Knowledge hub across the work of the two Programmes on sustainable public procurement and sustainable tourism.

Eco-innovation and textiles
Eco-innovation is the development and application of a business model, shaped by a new business strategy that incorporates sustainability throughout all business operations based on life cycle thinking and in cooperation with partners across the value chain. UNEP assists especially small and medium-sized enterprises to apply this methodology, but also promotes this approach to policy makers and other actors in key value chains. A particular focus is the textile value chains, where UNEP aims to provide knowledge and leadership by convening partners with the aim to make the value chain circular and sustainable.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
