Org. Setting and Reporting
This internship is located within Subprogramme 3: "Economic development and integration" of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA - unescwa.org). The intern will be working under the direct supervision of the Director of the Subprogramme.
The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. The internship certificate is awarded on the recommendation of the supervisor.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the (COMPANY NAME). Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. The (COMPANY NAME) accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance coverage to cover the full period of the internship at the duty station and provide a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the internship. The (COMPANY NAME) accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to personal effects that may occur during the internship. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities of the internship position encompass all aspects of the work of the Subprogramme. The intern will be involved in carrying out the following tasks:
(1) Conducts research and reference searches on issues relating to economic governance, economic development, institution-building, political economy and SEPC's general areas of work;
(2) Compiles, processes and works with socioeconomic databases derived from a variety of sources;
(3) Supports drafting of inputs to presentations, project documents and research papers as well as supports the organization of meetings;
(4) Surveys and prepares reports on the economic and social policy environment in the region;
(5) Performs other duties assigned.

* Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
Fields of Study: Economics, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Public Administration and Governance or Statistics, Engineering, or Transport & Road Safety
* Be computer literate in standard software applications, in particular Microsoft Word and Excel;
* Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
* Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position , fluency in English is required; and fluency of Arabic is desirable.
Note: "Fluency" equals a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
