Org. Setting and Reporting

The Office of the (COMPANY NAME) High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat Department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.

This announcement broadcasts international internship assignments with Secretariat of the Humanitarian Funds in the Anti-Torture, Coordination and Funds Section (ACFS) of the Human Rights Treaties Branch (HRTB).

The (COMPANY NAME) Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture was established in 1981 by the General Assembly (resolution 36/151) to help victims and their families to rebuild their lives and to seek redress for the human rights violations they have suffered.

The (COMPANY NAME) Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery was established by the General Assembly in 1991 (resolution 46/122), to provide rehabilitation and assistance to individuals whose human rights have been severely violated as a result of contemporary forms of slavery.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, under the overall guidance of the Chief of Section and the intern works under the supervision of the Human Rights Officer and the Funds Secretary. This assignment shall be offered for an initial period of three (3) months, renewable for a combined period of six (6) months, upon further approval by the supervisor, with an initial commencement date ranging/starting from January 2022 to December 2022.

This internship is an UNPAID and full-time engagement that provides a framework through which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the work of the (COMPANY NAME) by way of their service within Secretariat entities. Responsibilities

The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.

Daily responsibilities of Humanitarian Funds interns will depend on the individual's background.

Duties may include but are not limited to evaluating and analysing project applications and liaising with applicant organizations to provide technical assistance, contributing to communications and fundraising efforts. In particular, the intern may:

- Conduct substantive research on, and analysis of, developments concerning torture and contemporary forms of slavery in specific countries, with the aim of helping the Organization provide direct assistance to victims of torture and/or slavery and their family members ;
- Review, record and compile information on best practices and lessons learned from grantees of the Funds;
- Conduct outreach, prepare and translate promotional material to enhance the visibility of the two Funds (website, brochures, social media, newsletters etc.);
- Contribute to fundraising efforts, including by updating webpages and other promotional material on the work and impact of the Funds and preparing background papers on the profile of potential donors;
- Help with the organization, service of annual sessions of the Funds' Boards of Trustees, including public events and policy discussions;
- Take notes during the sessions/pre-sessions as well as carry out administrative duties such as the preparation of documentation and reference files in advance of and during the session;
- Contribute to the work of other parts of the (COMPANY NAME) Human Rights Office;
- and Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor, as appropriate.

Education

To qualify for the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat internship programme, applicants must, at the time of submission, be a graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or, be a graduate or enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree) preferably in the area of law, political science, international relations, communications, marketing, project management, social sciences, or a related field, OR have graduated with a university degree as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship on the date specified in the Acceptance letter.

Languages

English, French and Spanish are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English. Fluency in French or Spanish is required, and knowledge of the other is an advantage. Knowledge of another official (COMPANY NAME) language is desirable (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, or Russian).
