This position is located in the Geneva office of (COMPANY NAME) Mine Action Service (UNMAS) within the Office of the Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO).
Established in 1997, the (COMPANY NAME) Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating (COMPANY NAME) mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and supporting the development of standards, policies and norms.
As a specialized service of the (COMPANY NAME) located within the Department of Peace Operations, UNMAS operates under UN legislative mandates of both the General Assembly and the Security Council. Year after year, thousands of people are killed or injured by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices. Many are disabled for life. The situation is particularly worrisome in protracted conflicts. UNMAS plays a key role in mitigating explosive hazards through clearance, stockpile destruction, risk education, victim assistance and advocacy. The Geneva office acts as its humanitarian hub and work with humanitarian organizations to integrate mine action in humanitarian responses and policies. It also coordinates the UN positions and statements in relation to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC), the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), Implementation Support Unit in Geneva of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and supports field operations with policy guidance.
UNMAS coordinates the Mine Action Area of Responsibility and is the 'provider of last resort' for mine action within the Global Protection Cluster led by UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The group is composed of UN agencies, NGOs and international organizations who work together to improve the impact and reach of mine action. The NGO Humanity and Inclusion (HI) co-coordinates the group at the global level.
The UNMAS/DPO Geneva internship is for six months.
The internship is unpaid and fulltime, and interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the Communication Team based in New York.
Duties of the intern include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in monitoring media coverage of mine action and international relations issues.
- Distribute relevant articles to key partners.
- Establish and maintain a mine action video library.
- Assist with media outreach.
- Assist in creating graphic-design related materials.
- Assist in advocacy and outreach activities to internal and external audiences.
- Research, compile, draft and edit basic information for use in the preparation and production of public information materials, including website content.
- Assist with the maintenance and help develop UNMAS Social Media tools (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
- Assist in liaison with public information focal points in field programmes specifically related to generating multimedia public information materials.
- Assist in the preparation of outreach material such as talking points, correspondence and presentations.
- Events and website management, stocking and mailing public information materials.
- Performs other duties as requested by the supervisor.

To qualify for an internship with the (COMPANY NAME), applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

- Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point);

For this position, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable.
