The Department of Public Information/News and Media Division/Coverage and Media Services Branch/News Monitoring Unit internships are for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension (for up to another three (3) months), depending on the needs of the department. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of NMU Chief and/or senior NMU colleagues.
Under the direct supervision and guidance of NMU Chief and/or senior NMU colleagues, the intern will assist with traditional and social media monitoring/listening, analysis and interpretation. They will be utilising commercial and open source news aggregators, monitoring and analytics tools, as well as primary media sources. Daily tasks will include researching, gathering and analysing media coverage for inclusion in NMU's daily and ad hoc products. They will also assist in data collection and information management.

Applicants must be enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, a graduate degree programme in journalism, communication, media studies, political science, international relations, or related area.
To qualify for an internship with the (COMPANY NAME) New York Headquarters Internship Programme, Department of Public Information, the following conditions must be met:
1. Applicants must:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

However, they are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their UN professional history profile (PHP). For this particular internship, familiarity with media monitoring tools is desired.
For this internship, fluency in English and in Arabic or Chinese is a must. Knowledge of another UN official language (French, Russian and/or Spanish) is desirable.
