Job Description:

The position is located in the French Language Unit, UN News Section I of the News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications, which produces news and feature stories on multimedia platforms including radio, video, photo and web. The internship is for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension up to six (6) months, pending the needs of the department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Chief of the French Unit, UN News Section I.

Responsibilities

The unit is seeking interns in gaining professional, hands-on experience with news writing, radio/audio and other multimedia functions as well as data visualization tools, specifically related to writing and production, digital audio, video recording, editing and social media, on international issues such as development, human rights and climate change, and other UN priority areas. Prospective candidates must be familiar with online analytical tools, platforms, and software.

Functions will include:
-supporting news writing, multimedia and audio/video production within the unit, including by gathering information from diverse sources.
-assist in researching and analyzing information on assigned topics/issues.
-help to assess news value and other potential impact
-using visual elements like charts, graphs, and maps, data visualization tools provide an accessible way to see and understand trends, outliers, and patterns in data.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the (COMPANY NAME) New York Headquarters Internship Programme, Department of Public Information, the following conditions must be met:

1. Applicants must:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in broadcasting, journalism, communications, multimedia or media studies (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in broadcasting, journalism, communications, multimedia or media studies (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, multimedia or media studies (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar;

3. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English or French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME). For this internship advertised, fluency in both French and English are required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
