Job Description:

Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is located in the International Tax and Development Cooperation Branch (ITDCB) / Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) / Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). Start date is March 2021, though applicants interested to take up an internship later in autumn/winter 2021 are also encouraged to apply - please indicate the period during which you are available. Internships last for two months with an opportunity for extension up to six months depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Department or Office to which they are assigned.

The intern will support the work of the Development Cooperation Forum (DCF). A core function of the (COMPANY NAME) Economic and Social Council, the DCF is the global multi- stakeholder forum mandated to review trends, progress and emerging issues in international development cooperation. It generates concrete guidance for policy makers and practitioners on the role of development cooperation in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development.

The next High-Level Meeting of the DCF will be held in May 2021 at UN Headquarters. Extensive preparations and post-Meeting follow-up are involved, including research and analysis; strategic communication and outreach; and planning for webinars and other virtual events targeting a global audience, with key activities taking place during the internships period in the winter/spring of 2021. More extensive post-meeting follow-up work, including research and analysis, as well as outreach and communication, will be pursued in mid- to late 2021.

Responsibilities

Provide support to the work of the DCF Team and the International Tax and Development Cooperation Branch by:
*Carrying out research for policy papers and contributing to data collection on key trends and emerging issues in international development cooperation and sustainable development. Research areas could include, but are not limited to, trends and challenges in: quality, effectiveness and impact of official development assistance (ODA); capacity development for domestic resource mobilization, data and statistics and science, technology and innovation; building resilience through risk-informed and climate-smart development cooperation; South- South and triangular cooperation; private sector engagement in development cooperation; and monitoring, review and impact assessment.
*Assisting in the substantive preparation, organization and servicing of the 2021 High-level Meeting of the DCF at UN Headquarters.
*Helping to disseminate DCF analysis, recommendations and policy guidance through various communication and outreach channels, in service of overall efforts to make the DCF' s work more accessible and engaging to a wider range of stakeholders, including youth. This involves preparing a new concept and content for the top layer pages of the UN DCF website to present the work of the DCF in a more attractive and easily accessible manner. It also involves preparing content for UN social media activities, blog articles, news articles, and press statements on behalf of senior UN officials.
*Preparing and providing input for briefing notes, talking points, speeches and similar materials on development cooperation issues for senior UN officials.
*Following intergovernmental meetings of the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council and preparing draft summaries.
*Assisting with any other ad hoc assignments related to the DCF.

During the internship the intern will:
*Learn to prepare briefing notes, draft policy papers with concrete policy guidance and do background research for analytical work by the Secretariat focused on the latest trends, progress and emerging challenges in international development cooperation.
*Test and refine their skills of preparing outreach and communication materials, including social media and website content.
* Learn to organize and provide substantive support to high-level intergovernmental meetings and policy dialogue in a fast-changing, increasingly virtual environment. Gain experience in related inter-governmental, multi-stakeholder and inter-agency processes. Gain insight into the conduct of international policy dialogue, consultations and negotiations, including on follow-up and review of the 2030 and Addis Agendas.
*Enhance technical skills by learning to use online platforms to support virtual meetings.
*Learn to work in a truly international environment with diverse colleagues and stakeholders and engage with policy makers and practitioners at concrete level.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the (COMPANY NAME) Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
*Applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent);
*Applicants who have graduated (as defined in (a) or (b) above), if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
*Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the (COMPANY NAME) Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the (COMPANY NAME) during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat.

To qualify for G-4 nonimmigrant status, interns must be serving essentially full-time, i.e. 35 + hours per week.

G-4 VISAS FOR INTERNS:
All interns assigned to a UN Organization, including Funds and Programmes, at a United States based duty station, who are not United States citizens or United States legal permanent residents (LPR) will be required to obtain G-4 visas prior to travelling to the United States.

Prospective interns who are already in the United States in another nonimmigrant status may need to apply for a change of status to G-4 prior to joining the (COMPANY NAME) for an internship. It should be emphasized that prospective interns are responsible for ensuring that they have an appropriate valid visa and employment authorization allowing them to undertake the internship.

If the applicant is in F-1 status and has a valid EAD, they may undertake an internship within the scope of their F-1 visa without seeking a change of visa status. Please note, however, that interns in F-1 status who wish to undertake an internship following completion of their academic programme as part of Optional Practical Training (OPT) 'may' need to seek a change of visa status to G-4 (This process currently takes about 8-10 weeks) or obtain G-4 visa overseas.

REMOTE INTERNSHIP (COVID-19):
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship
