Public Engagement Division Intern

The Public Engagement Division of (COMPANY NAME) (HRW) is seeking a graduate student intern in the New York office. Ideally, the intern will be available about 15-20 hours per week beginning in late-April to early-May 2021 until August 2021(dates and times are flexible). The student will intern closely with the Public Engagement team responsible for digital campaigns and public engagement for the organization, including through digital advocacy, innovative social engagement and engaging donors and other key stakeholders in active campaigns.
Responsibilities: This intern will assist the team on a new social media platform exploration project. The selected candidate will gain skills conducting research on social media engagement and human rights issues, and providing administrative assistance. The intern may also have the opportunity to sit-in on high level advocacy discussions, intersecting with multiple teams across the organization as well as external partners. Students will also have opportunities to attend professional development workshops, and network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.
Due to COVID-19, many of our offices remain closed or are open at a limited capacity. HRW prioritizes the safety of our interns. In locations that have eased office restrictions and are open at a limited capacity, interns are not expected to report to the office and remote arrangements will remain an option for the foreseeable future. However, interns may have the option of reporting to an office on a voluntary basis in accordance with HRW's COVID-19 policies.
Qualifications: The intern must be a graduate student majoring in international relations, political science, journalism, public policy or a related field for the duration of the internship. Applicants should be enthusiastic, detail-oriented, self-motivated, reliable, and creative. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Prior experience with digital advocacy and campaigning, using major social media platforms, and/or multimedia production is preferred. Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are essential.
Salary: Interns will paid a gross hourly wage of USD 15.00 per hour. (COMPANY NAME) offers twenty (20) days of vacation prorated per year pursuant to the work schedule and length of contract. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as (COMPANY NAME) internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
