Department Summary
The Center for Advanced Light and Electron Microscopy (CALM-EM) is the core microscopy resource of the Research and Early Development (gRED) organization at Genentech. The CALM-EM group is located in the Department of Research Pathology which provides pathology expertise and tissue-based analysis to support basic scientific discoveries, development of drug targets, and biomarkers using both human tissues and animal models in support of drug development throughout the pipeline. The mission of CALM-EM is to support and advance research and development projects utilizing methods in optical and electron microscopy, digital imaging and image analysis.

We are looking for an enthusiastic intern with experience with or interest in learning sample processing, staining and imaging for correlative light and electron microscopy applications. In this position you will be working on developing and optimizing protocols for fixation and staining of cells and tissues for applications related to expansion microscopy and correlated light and electron microscopy. Your project will be part of our efforts to build end-to-end microscopy and analysis pipelines that support our scientific programs across different therapeutic areas. The ideal candidate will have hands on experience in light and electron microscopy, sample preparation, ultramicrotomy, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy and is familiar and comfortable with bench work and handling potentially hazardous and radioactive chemicals.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on site.

Key Responsibilities
* Reproduce, evaluate and optimize published protocols for expansion microscopy of cells and/or tissue sections.
* Sample evaluation by imaging with various bright field, fluorescence or electron microscope imaging methods.
* Screening of antibodies and development of specific immunohistochemistry protocols for correlated light and electron microscopy projects.
* Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of staining and labeling patterns.

* Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

Who You Are

* Any Degree Level. Undergraduates who have completed at least one year of undergraduate coursework at a university, current graduate students (MS or PhD) who are available to work full time for the duration of the internship, or recent grads (within 2 years of receiving their last degree).
Preferred majors: Cell Biology, Life Sciences, Bioengineering or Biophysics

Other Qualifications
* Experience with image analysis or ultrastructural segmentation is welcome

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $21.00 - $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
