Job Description:

These temporary positions are located in the Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division (FOTCD) in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, under the overall supervision of Coordinator of the Secretariat of the Fact-Finding Mission on Belarus and direct supervision of the Fact-Finding Team Leader.

Responsibilities

The Associate Interpreters will be responsible for the following main duties and functions:

- Assists in providing accurate translation/interpretation, as required, from English to Russian and vice versa;
- Participate in field missions and interprets the interviews of victims, witnesses and sources;
- Assists in the production of accurate and verbatim translation of written and oral witness statements, media articles and other documents from English to Russian and vice versa as required by the coordinator;
- Maintains strict security and confidentiality of information;
- Performs any other tasks as necessary.

Education

An advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, languages, or a related field. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A Certificate for (COMPANY NAME) Competitive Examination for Interpretation is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of 2 years of work experience in translation and/or interpretation, including as part of academic research work, is required;
One year of work experience in these fields within the (COMPANY NAME) Common Systems or regional organizations is desirable;
Experience in providing translation or interpretation to human rights investigations or on human rights-related subjects is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Russian is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

This position is temporarily available from 1 July 2021 until 31 March 2022 (9 months) with possible extension, and is subject to availability of funding and/or extension of the mandate.

* If the selected candidate is a staff member from the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

* While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

* Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

* This temporary job opening may be limited to "internal candidates," who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

* Staff members of the (COMPANY NAME) common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
