BAT UK IS LOOKING FOR A BATTERY TECHNOLOGIST

SENIORITY LEVEL: Senior non-management position

FUNCTION: Marketing R&D

LOCATION: Southampton, United Kingdom

ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES

Key objectives are:

Work along with other SMEs in the team to discover, develop and qualify new, product integration-ready battery and energy storage technologies for BAT. Support breakthrough innovation across BAT's PRRP device categories and be a key part of delivering world-class products that exceed consumer expectations with focus on product performance, sustainability, and safety.

This role would execute the performance validation in BAT's batteries test lab to support battery development and device validation activities within New Category engineering. A core responsibility for this role will be rigorous testing of emerging battery technologies and chemistries as well as battery integration as appropriate for inclusion in BAT's future device portfolio. This role also significantly contributes to the future device architecture evolution and new technology selection by establishing the strong datapoints from the battery testing to support proper technical decision making.

Reporting Level: Stand-alone position

Geographic Scope: Global

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR

* Supporting the battery and device development team in battery design assessment, device and battery verification testing, sample preparation and functional problems solving.

* Specification of battery requirements from detailed project briefs.

* Communicate the new battery requirement to suppliers as well as arrange technical sessions in order to drive the appropriate technical options.

* Accountable for all aspects of battery design and design verification (theoretical and experimental).

* Battery manufacturer identification and selection.

* Battery validation and the functional safety testing of batteries and devices.

* Experimental and test design for new battery formats, chemistries, or device operating principles

* Specifying full battery validation and product integration test plans, test cases and analysing results to ensure the functionality and reliability of the product and its batteries.

* Failure analysis and root cause investigations of battery failures or poor performance.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Experience Required

Hands-on experience either in design development from battery manufacture business or engineering role in battery system integration from consumer electronics or EV industry.

Capable of establishing the test system to perform battery assessment needed.

Capable of conducting Charge/Discharge testing, environmental and safety relevant testing of electrochemical cells and battery packs.

Experience in detailed cell and battery pack characterisation.

Experience in materials characterisations techniques e.g. battery test equipment, X-ray diffraction, SEM and CT.

Significant knowledge and understanding of battery manufacturing processes.

Knowledgeable of consumer electronic device validation and product safety requirements.

Some contemporary knowledge with consumer electronics failure analyses.

Capable of data analysis and characterize using proper tools.

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

* Able to build proper dataset to navigate team through complicate issues for battery and integration. Influence and coordinate cross-functional teams, including internal and key external partnerships, critical in the delivery of programmes and initiatives to ensure the most effective use of internal/external resource/expertise.

* Able to manage external parties to deliver the solution needed on particular project and guide them through continues improvement.

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

* Hold a degree in any of the following fields: chemistry, materials science, electronics, chemical engineering or similar.
