Virtualisation Control Plane
With 80.000 talents working in 68 countries, we are one of the biggest high-tech employers in the field of safety and security. In the Netherlands, where 2000 employees are based, we are located in four cities: Huizen, Delft, Eindhoven and Hengelo (HQ). Together with an extensive ecosystem of knowledge partners, customers and suppliers, we work on radars for naval vessels, cyber security solutions, transportation systems, communication equipment for land forces, cryogenic cooling solutions, research & development for radar tech (in collaboration with TU Delft).
The software department of the Application Engineering cluster is responsible for the software development in Combat Management and Radar- and Optical sensors for worldwide navies- and defense systems. The work is performed in multi-disciplinary agile teams with specialists in software/system/test engineering and functional design.
About the assignment
Within the software department, we have the desire to deliver new features to market even faster. For this, more loosely coupled systems and automated deployments are necessary.
To build those systems, we are using different virtualisation technologies. Decoupling, the infrastructure (OS, networking) from the applications, is achieved using software containers. Deploying and managing those containerised applications you need an orchestration solution. There are use-cases we also need virtual machine support besides software container deployments. At the moment, various initiatives are added to Kubernetes to support virtual machine orchestration and controlled by the Kubernetes control plane to rule them all.
The internship assignment is about researching different solutions for VM orchestration on top of Kubernetes. Each should be proven using a demonstrator.
For the Naval domain, a list of selection criteria has to be established to support the design decision on VM vs software container deployment and the use of a common control plane.
