Description du poste:

Security-sector reform (SSR) promotes the importance of transparency, integrity and accountability in armed forces, police, border guards, customs and other security-sector institutions, in particular in fragile countries. The Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI), which hosts the Security-Sector Reform (SSR) Unit, is part of the UN's Department of Peace Operations. We bring together multi-disciplinary specialists to provide a UN headquarters focal point and technical SSR resource for the UN system, as well as national and international partners. Specifically, the SSR Unit provides field support and UN system-wide capacity-building in this important area.

The Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) includes the Department's activities in the areas of police, justice and corrections, mine action and weapons/ammunition management, the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of ex-combatants and security sector reform (https://pxxxxxxxxxxx.xx.xxx/xx/xxxxxxxxxx-xx-xxxxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxs).

The internship is for a minimum of six (6) months. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member of the unit. The internship will be home-based but may include a period in the SSR Unit HQ in New York.

Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be assigned a work plan with focus on providing support to SSRU colleagues with a special focus on SSR-related issues such as accountability; policy and guidance development; and security sector reform in West-Africa and the Middle East and North Africa region. Within the delegated authority, the interns will be responsible for the following duties:
* Assist in the team's data and information management efforts;
* Support the organization of meetings with Member States and/or senior officials;
* Assist in the collection, development and management of best practices, lessons learned and
other relevant documents with regards to SSR and o this end gather, research, analyse and present SSR-related information from various sources;
* Assist in the drafting of various documents, e.g., minutes of meetings, briefing notes, policy
documents, draft notes to file on meetings etc.;
* Perform other duties as required.

Education

Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have recently graduated with a university degree; if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages; be computer literate in standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) and have a personal commitment to the ideals o the Charter; and Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and to be tolerant of differing opinions views.* For the post focusing on West-Africa knowledge of the political and security situation of the region is desirable.* For the post focusing on Middle East and North Africa region. knowledge of the political and security situation of the region is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. For this
internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. For the internship post
focused on West-Africa, fluency in French is desirable.
