This profile is for the sole purpose of the Internship Programme of the (COMPANY NAME) Conference for Trade and Development in Geneva. There should be no expectation of employment within the UN after an internship. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above carrying international recruitment status in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship. UN interns must have a valid visa. The Internship Programme is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (8 hours per day) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

This position is located in the Division on Technology and Logistics (DTL) of the (COMPANY NAME) Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva. The intern will be involved in projects and tasks related to the ASYCUDA programme. The UNCTAD Automated System for Customs Data is an integrated customs management system for international trade and transport operations in a modern automated environment. Advanced software applications are designed and developed for customs administrations and the trade community to comply with international standards when fulfilling import, export and transit related procedures. Through its ASYCUDA Programme, UNCTAD aims at: - Modernizing customs operations and helping to improve revenue collection, -Facilitating trade efficiency and competitiveness by substantially reducing transaction time and costs, - Improving security by streamlining procedures of cargo control, transit of goods and clearance of goods, - Helping fight corruption by enhancing the transparency of transactions, - Promoting sustainable development by cutting down on the use of paper, through the use of electronic transactions and documents.

This internship is for three months starting in March with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.

Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

- Assisting in drafting, reviewing and preparing official documents for the ASYCUDA programme, including external communication products, and preparation of an activity report.
- Helping with the building up and maintenance of an information repository on ASYCUDA user countries/territories
- Attending and summarizes conferences and meetings
- Preparing outreach and communication material for the programme, conducting document, legal and internet research as required.
- Working on web-presentation, assist in the updating of the website.
- Compiling statistics on ASYCUDA.
- Carrying out media analysis and helps ASYCUDA keep track of its communication profile.
- Supporting speech-writing and other outreach efforts as required.

More generally, interns shall:

1. Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11.
2. Provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a direct relation to or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law.
3. Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN;
4. Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate official in the receiving department/office, they may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external source any information which has become known to them by reason of their association with the UN or the receiving department/office, that they know or ought to have known has not been made public. They may not use any such information without the written authorization of the appropriate official, and such information may never be used for personal gain. These obligations also apply after the end of the internship with the UN.
5. Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or on the receiving department/office and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the (COMPANY NAME) Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Is your field of study closely related to the type of internship you are applying for?
Will you be able to cover the costs of travel, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship?
Are you a student in a Bachelor's (final year), Master's or Ph.D. programme or equivalent, or have you completed a degree and are able to commence an internship within a year of graduation?

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat.
