The International Seabed Authority (ISA) in cooperation with National Oceanography Centre (NOC) Southampton, UK, is offering one (1) internship placement to candidates with a background and interest in relational database managements systems; web development and geographic information systems (GIS), within the Office of Environmental Management and Mineral Resources (OEMMR).

The internship opportunity is open to candidates, 35 years and under, from developing member States, seeking to improve their knowledge and skills while learning more about the work of the Authority.

The two (2) month internship (1 June 2xxx - x1 July 2020) is financially supported in the total amount of USD$5,xxx.x0 for the duration.

Interns work five days per week (full time - 37.5 hours) under the supervision of the Database Manager.

Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

1. Perform Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) of data in accordance with data management policy.

2. Digitize documents into appropriate format for document management systems or databases.

3. Perform data quality control checks ensuring completeness, accuracy and relevance of data received.

4. Execute daily checklist of routine maintenance tasks related to the data management system and its components.

5. Create metadata to appropriately catalogue data and be able to respond to requests for information and access to relevant files in a timely manner.

6. Ensure compliance with local information security protocols.

7. Validating data by comparing paper based data with corresponding electronic data.

8. Perform database backup for electronic data management system.

9. Perform archiving of obsolete data and ensure data storage capacity is optimized.

10. Level 1 troubleshooting of all database systems performance and user issues.

11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Objective and Deliverables / Results expected

Effectively deliver a wide range of data management tasks ensuring that the data management system is kept up to date and accurate. The data management intern is also expected to significantly contribute to maintaining an effective uptime for all database system.

Education

To qualify for an internship within the Office of Environmental Management and Mineral Resources (OEMMR) of The International Seabed Authority Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

Applications are sought from either students or young governmental officials.

1. Student applicants must:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme or related field (second university degree
or equivalent, or higher); or

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree
programme or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

(c) have graduated with a university degree or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above).

2. Young government officials must have a university degree.

3. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar.

4. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the Authority; and

5. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional experience for participation in the programme. However, experience working with relational database managements systems; web development and geographic information systems (GIS) would be desirable.

Languages

English or French are the working languages of ISA. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

5. Other requirements
(a) Interns shall be required to sign a confidentiality agreement with the Authority.

(b) At the end of the Internship period, interns shall submit a report on the outcome of their
internship and how it will have an impact on their career path. Upon successful completion
of the internship, the Authority will issue certificates to the interns.

6. Visa
Interns are responsible, where appropriate, for obtaining the necessary transit visas.
The Authority will facilitate the required visa to Jamaica.

7. Medical Insurance
(a) The Authority accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs
arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship.

(b) Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance coverage to cover
the full period of the internship at the duty station and provide a medical certificate of good
health prior to the commencement of the internship.
