Org. Setting and Reporting
The Office of the (COMPANY NAME) High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat Department responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.
This announcement broadcasts international internship assignments with the Anti-Torture, Coordination and Funds Section (ACFS) located within the Human Rights Treaties Branch (HRTB). This particular internship aims to attract individuals who have an interest in serving with the Humanitarian Funds which consists of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture and the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Contemporary Forms of Slavery.
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, under the overall guidance of the Chief of Section, and supervision of the Committee Secretary, the intern reports to the Human Rights Officer in the assigned Committee. The assignment shall be for an initial period of three (3) months, renewable for a combined period of six (6) months, upon further approval by the supervisor, and a scheduled commencement date ranging/starting from January 2020 to January 2021.
This internship is an UNPAID and full-time engagement that provides a framework through which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the work of the (COMPANY NAME) by way of their service within Secretariat entities. Applicants should have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the (COMPANY NAME) with a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter, and have the demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs - which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.
Daily responsibilities of Humanitarian Funds (Torture and Slavery) interns will depend on the individual's background and duties may include but are not limited to evaluating and analyzing project applications and liaising with applicant organizations to provide technical assistance, and in particular, the intern may: Conduct substantive research on and analysis of developments concerning torture and contemporary forms of slavery in specific countries, with the aim of helping the Organization provide direct assistance to victims of torture and/or slavery and their family members; Review, record and compile information on best practices and lessons learned from grantees of the Funds; Conduct outreach and prepare promotional material to enhance the visibility of the two Funds (website, brochures, et cetera); Assist in the preparation of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) country visits; Help with the organization of and participate in the annual sessions of the Funds' Boards of Trustees, including public events and policy discussions; Contribute to the work of other parts of the (COMPANY NAME) Human Rights Office; Service the sessions of the Board of Trustees of the Humanitarian Funds, including by carrying out research pertaining to human rights issues, in particular in relation to the redress and rehabilitation of victims of torture and forms of slavery; Help increase the outreach of the Humanitarian Funds, including through updating webpages and other promotional material on the work and impact of the Funds; Support the organization of training activities and developing relevant training material; Prepare country and legal analysis and draft legal background papers for human rights treaty bodies, related both to State reporting procedures and treaty body complaints procedures; Assist with the handling of individual communications received under the different treaty body complaints procedures; Take notes during the sessions/pre-sessions as well as carrying out administrative duties such as the preparation of documentation and reference files in advance of and during the session; and Perform other duties, in particular related to other mandates supported by the Human Rights Treaties Branch.

To qualify for the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat internship programme applicants must, at the time of their submission, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree), preferably in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field, OR have graduated with a university degree as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period from the date of graduation.
English and French are the working languages of the (COMPANY NAME) Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English or French is required, knowledge of the other is an asset. Knowledge of another official (COMPANY NAME) language is desirable (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
